Electronic Monitoring System
Electronic monitoring is the use of camera technology on fishing vessels to record catch effort for shore side review and verification. The use of this technology can:
- Support sustainable fisheries through transparency of catch.
- Combat illegal fishing activities.
- Monitor crew welfare and health and safety practices at sea
- Provide the fishermen at sea evidence of well caught and managed fish stock to use to market their catch
- Empower fish harvesters to take a lead role in conservation and sustainability, while balancing traditional and commercial fishing activities.
- Provide improved catch, bycatch and discard data for population modelling, stock assessment and conservation.
- Employ and train local community members.
